Argentina constructs wind farms, develops Puerto Quequen as a logistics base

Puerto Quequen, Argentina, starts constructing a facility to handle wind turbines, which later on will be converted into a container terminal.

The port on the southeast of the Buenos Aires province is to receive the wind turbines already in early 2019. These will be shipped from Asia for wind farms Vientos Necochea, Vientos Miramar and Vientos Reta (Tres Arroyos), which are developed within the RenovAr Plan of Argentina’s Ministry of Energy and Mining to generate and use renewable energy.

In September 2015, Argentina enacted legislation whereby 20% of the national electric energy would be generated from renewable sources by year 2025. During the initial tender process, there were selected 29 projects in 14 provinces.

The port of Quequen will serve as an entry point for almost 20 logistics projects at the territory of the Buenos Aires province.

The operations will involve the discharge, storage and subsequent delivery of the wind turbines’ parts: blades of up to 65m long each, towers, hub and nacelles. It is expected that 8-10 vessels will be coming for each of the three wind farms. In turn, each wind turbine needs 4 trucks to be moved, meaning that 300-400 trips from the port to the wind park will be required to move all the components.

To facilitate this sophisticated logistics, the port has started developing the land plot of about 65,300 sq.m. at the Necochea Logistics Area (ALN), which will be zoned for circulation of trucks, accumulation of large components and temporary storage of special cargoes. The necessary surface for the storage areas is being adapted through levelling and compaction works.

At the same time, the Consortium of Puerto Quequen has initiated the process of selecting a logistics operator who will later be responsible for completing the works and providing services at the so-called zone 1 of ALN.

Once completed, this facility will allow handling containers and general cargo, that are not handled at the Quequen port today, thus contributing to diversification of its operations.
