19,038 TEU: Maersk sets containership load record

Mumbai Maersk handled at Tanjung Pelepas Terminal

Maersk Line informs that one of its newest containerships – Mumbai Maersk – has set a world record for highest-ever load by loading 19,038 TEU, thus surpassing the 19,000-mark for the very first time – not only for a Maersk vessel, but any vessel in the world.

The second generation Triple-E ship left the APM Terminals facility at Tanjung Pelepas Port, Malaysia, over the past weekend and is now on the way to Europe. Its first stop is scheduled at Rotterdam on September 5th.

The shipping line says in a statement that Mumbai Maersk has a nominal capacity of 20,568 TEU, being a 2nd generation Triple-E class vessel. It is the newest to enter the Triple-E fleet in May 2018 and is deployed on the Asia-to-Europe service (AE5).

The 19,038 TEU load has raised a new bar for Maersk by surpassing Madison Maersk, a 1st generation Triple-E class vessel, which reached 18,215 TEU in 2015. At the same time, Mumbai Maersk overtakes all ever reported record loadings from other container carriers.

The record-breaking load also marks a sign of strategic progress for Maersk. Tanjung Pelepas Terminal operated by APM Terminals is one of the hub facilities where productivity is currently high, also benefitting Maersk Line in line with the integrator strategy.

“Our hubs are currently breaking existing productivity records. This record on most loaded containers during a port stay is one of many illustrations showing that we are well-positioned to become a company of operators who are proud, passionate and world-class at servicing our clients,” says Keith Svendsen, Chief Operating Officer at APM Terminals.

Tanjung Pelepas Terminal is equipped with 24 Super Port Panamax cranes along its 8 linear berths with a total length of 2.88km. According to APMT, the terminal currently averages over 32 moves per hour/crane, and the berth productivity stands at 100 moves per hour minimum.
