Vessels reach the port through a unique 280m-long lock, which lifts the vessels from the Eurovia Guadalquivir channel to the port facilities and also serves to protect the city from flooding. Sevilla handles general, dry bulk and liquid bulk cargoes. In 2017, its throughput was 4.56 mln tonnes (-5.36% to 2016). The port has a 400,000 TEU container terminal, which is now operated by Spanish Boluda Corporacion Maritima and German short sea shipping line OPDR, part of the CMA CGM Group. The port handled 105,566 TEU last year.
