Kalmar Port 2060: smart containers, Hyperloop and personalized logistics

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has presented a new video Port 2060, the company’s vision of future logistics and cargo handling. According to Kalmar, in 2060 big data will change fundamentally the way the world trade operates, making it more efficient, safe and sustainable. Services will be more personalized: your favourite blend of coffee, can be ordered directly from a local producer and shipped within minutes using the Hyperloop system.

“In 2060, we believe that goods will be moved rapidly around the world in smart containers that know their contents and destination. Everything will be automated and highly efficient,” says Frank Kho, Kalmar’s Vice President, Market Intelligence, Strategy and Development and a member of the Port 2060 Think Tank.

Terminals will be complete logistic ecosystems acting as global interchange points for an on-demand society. All ports will be fully automated and run on renewable energy with zero carbon emissions. When cargo arrives at the quayside it is unloaded immediately and delivered to its destination, again by means of Hyperloop.

The Port 2060 initiative was launched in 2011.  Through a series of articles, blog posts and conference presentations it aims to instigate discussion on the future of the port industry. Setting the mission of the program, Kalmar stipulates that by 2060 all ports’ productivity will be tripled compared to 2013.

The new Port 2060 vision is a result of co-operative creativity of all Kalmar and Cargotec employees, with the final touches generated by a team of Kalmar and Navis R&D and business development experts.

“This time we wanted to have a more holistic look over the entire logistics chain,” comments Frank Kho. “The original Port 2060 vision was mainly focused on the physical dimensions of a port. However, the possibilities that digitalisation, data and software will provide, will have a fundamental impact on the global trade and logistics ecosystem. Automation and artificial intelligence, for example, will help us to create a more sustainable future while enabling better collaboration and interaction between people”.

Kalmar continues the discussion on the future of cargo handling online, in its Port 2060 blog where the company regularly publishes new articles, raising up topics that can help its customers and partners to prepare for the future and adopt new technologies and innovations.
